Christopher Howard

An independent curator and critic, Christopher Howard earned a BA in interdisciplinary studies from the University of Florida in Gainesville and an MA in art history from Hunter College, City University of New York. His thesis examined “The Critical Reception of Dennis Oppenheim, 1962–70.”Howard is managing editor at the College Art Association, working on CAA News and www.collegeart.org, among other projects and publications. He also served as editor of caa.reviews from 2001 to 2005.Howard began writing about music as a teenager in the early 1990s, reviewing records, CDs, and live concerts and interviewing members of independent and underground bands (Royal Trux, God Is My Co-Pilot, Silver Jews, Harry Pussy) for Ink Nineteen, a monthly magazine covering music in Florida. By the late 1990s, his interests shifted to contemporary art, which he covered, along with music, for the Orlando Weekly.A few years after moving to New York, Howard started working toward a graduate degree in art history and began a serious pursuit of both art criticism and curatorial work. His writing has appeared at Artforum.com and in the L Magazine, the Brooklyn Rail, Art Notes, the Art Book, and ‘Sup, among others. Since 2006 he has organized several critically praised solo and group exhibitions in Brooklyn and Manhattan.Howard was a participant in the 2013 Art & Law Program, a "semester-long seminar series with a theoretical and philosophical focus on the effects of law and jurisprudence on cultural production and reception" led by Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento.
