A singular collapse can be terrifying. An individual can relate it and has fears of it. How would we view a network of machines in which one collapse has the potential to bring down the entire group?
This reminds me of the Steven Wright quote, "You know how it feels when you're leaning back on a chair, and you lean too far back, and you almost fall over backwards, but then you catch yourself at the last second? I feel like that all the time…"
