In the first week of June, the 52nd International Venice Biennale will open, presenting a survey of important contemporary work made by artists from all over the world. This is the first year that Mexico will be represented in the high-profile festival and they have selected as their representative new media artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. In the 1,000 square meters of the gothic 15th Century Palazzo Soranzo Van Axel, curators Priamo Lozada and Barbara Perea, have arranged a presentation of Lozano-Hemmer's work in a show entitled, 'Some Things Happen More Often Than All of the Time.' The artist is well-known within new media circles for large-scale installations that harken back to early optical and kinetic arts and sculpture, while making use of video, light, 'machine vision' programming, robotics, and other interactive media. For the Biennale he will create six large installations which further his efforts to generate 'anti-monuments for alien agency' which are inspired by the history of spectacles.
