Part exhibition, part performance, and part workshop for technology-obsessed artists, BAPLab 2006 is a one-day series of events happening on Saturday, July 22, and organized by Bushwick Art Projects. The mini-festival will be presented at 3rd Ward, a 20,000 square-foot Brooklyn space, and promises a high degree of artist interaction in addition to discrete displays of individual work. Throughout the day and night, BAP is setting up a sprawling, multi-part exhibition of video, new media, robotics, immersive installations, and other technology-based work by both established and emerging artists. There will also be a continuous 14-hour schedule of performances, with all kinds of electronic and analog music backed by video projects. Of the work on view, installations that react to the frenetic setting are sure to be the most interesting. For instance, Ernesto Klar's 'Convergenze Parallele' uses projected light, sound, and custom software to track dust particles in the air, while Jamie Burkart's 'Time is Long' creates a delay in live video by stringing a clothesline of magnetic tape across the space. With over 80 participants, there should be no shortage of skill-swapping and collaboration-oriented networking. Meanwhile, both visitors and those who can't make it can preview all of the projects on the BAPLab website. - Bill Hanley
