I thought about doing this a while back, and someone has finally created it: adding dimension to mapping by overlaying soundscapes. Gridskipper brings us news of Sound-seeker, a project out of New York that, to quote the creators, "privileges the ear over the eye". Sound-seeker overlays sample soundscapes from around the Big Apple on Google Maps to provide a sense of not only what is on the map, but what it sounds like. Sound-seeker is part of the New York Society of Acoustic Ecology, which runs NYSoundmap, which is carrying out various auditory art experiments in the city.

Samples up to 20 MB can be submitted to Sound-seeker for inclusion.
