Deadline Extended: Newark New Media Program

  • Deadline:
    Jan. 14, 2011, midnight

City Without Walls (cWOW), in collaboration with Saint Barnabas Health Care System, NewarkWORKS, and Newark Public Schools, seeks an artist-in-residence for its Newark New Media residency, education, and exhibition program at the intersection of new technology and contemporary art.

The new media artist in residence, working with a team of high-school apprentices, will create a major new work of new media art that will be exhibited at a prominent Newark venue. The artist will receive a stipend of $1,700 and an equipment/materials budget. Ten high-school students will apprentice under the artist’s supervision in fourteen weekly two-and-a-half-hour afterschool training sessions at Barringer High School’s newly equipped technology lab from mid February 2011 through June 2011. The final artwork will be presented in June 2011 on Prudential Center’s giant outdoor digital marquee seen by thousands of daily commuters. Preference will be given to new media artists with education-related experience.

Open to all cWOW members, including new members who join cWOW by the submission deadline with a minimum annual donation of $35 for individual members or $25 for students and seniors. Applicants solicited directly by jurors or curators (if there are any for this opportunity) will receive a complimentary membership. Artist member work that is uploaded to our website will become part of cWOW’s registry, and will be reviewed by every curator for every show that you select within a year of joining. Your chances of being selected for a show are great, though never guaranteed, because of our independent curatorial process. Your donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law and provide crucial support for our exhibition, education, residency and other programs. See member benefits and join at www.cwow.org.

All innovative interpretations of new media art will be considered, requiring some critical use of digital technology in the art-making process and product. Interactive gaming and/or short-form video for large-scale urban screens, and an integral incorporation of youth perspectives are especially encouraged.

After joining online, please complete the online application form at http://bit.ly/gu3ZIo. Applicants must also email the following entry materials to nnm@cwow.org with “NNM” in the subject line: (A) resume, (B) any required materials/equipment budget, (C) ten-week curriculum, (D) up to ten images, five videos, and/or URLs, and (E) an image list (filename title date media dimensions). Incomplete applications will not be considered.

DEADLINE 5 PM, FRIDAY, JAN 14: Including receipt of membership donation and completed application (online only).

Exhibition and reception dates to be determined. cWOW is a non-profit urban gallery for emerging art that advances the careers of artists while building the audience for contemporary art. Our exhibition and education programs use art and technology to build communities, careers, and contemporary culture. cWOW is New Jersey’s oldest not-for-profit alternative art space, founded in 1975, and a three-time recipient of the prestigious NJ State Council on the Arts "Citation of Excellence."
