The Division of Art in the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University (SMU) invites nominations and applications for a tenure-track full-time position in video art (Position No. 006569) with an additional expertise in any aspects of digital/hybrid media. While an appointment at the rank of assistant professor tenure track is anticipated, extraordinary candidates at all levels will be considered. This is an opportunity to be involved in the shaping of an innovative curriculum in video that is embedded in a program that engages students in a wide-range of media, including photography, painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, ceramics and creative computation.
With the opportunity to work across media within the Division and across disciplines throughout SMU, we seek candidates with diverse interests beyond the scope of video. Teaching responsibilities will include introductory and advanced courses in video art (image capture and post-production) and specialized courses in the candidate’s area(s) of additional expertise, such as digital/hybrid media, interactive art, performance, live image processing, 3D computer modeling and animation, internet-based art, physical computing, robotics and audio art.
Other responsibilities of the appointment include curricular development, graduate and undergraduate teaching, and the establishment of relationships with areas of study within a comprehensive school of the arts that is part of a university offering study in the humanities and sciences. The Meadows School of the Arts is a comprehensive school of the arts, providing an education centered on the study, creation and analysis of the visual, performing and communication arts within a liberal arts environment since 1963. Minimum qualifications: Must possess an MFA in Art with concentration or equivalent in video or digital/hybrid media; expertise to teach courses in video; a record of exhibitions as an artist and experience teaching at the university level.
Preferred qualifications: An understanding of contemporary art and theory and the history of video art within the broader scope of digital and hybrid media practices; a minimum of one year experience teaching graduate or
undergraduate courses in video art as well as courses in any of the following areas: interactive art, performance, live image processing, 3D computer modeling and animation, internet-based art, physical computing, robotics and audio art; interest in making significant contributions to graduate programs; research and/or creative scholarship which has led to publication, exhibition or dissemination in refereed journals, and/or national venues; experience mentoring culturally diverse students. Position begins August 2012.
