Profile
The internationally positioned MA in Fine Arts at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) is aimed at opening up, promoting and strengthening the diverse range of individual or collaborative routes of access to artistic and (trans)media practice in a common, highly dense space (space of experimentation, space of discourse, space of different actions etc). Students on the course are encouraged to explore different artistic /aesthetic strategies and methods such practice involves.
The MA in Fine Arts brings together artists, media authors, theorists and curators. The course centres on furthering students’ artistic development, on imparting the knowledge, capabilities and skills required to this end. The goal is to train individuals able to implement their authorship at a high aesthetic and technical level while gaining increasing awareness of other artistic practices as well as of prevailing social conditions. On completing their degrees, graduates will be in a position to play an active and influential role in what is referred to as the art system and equally in the multifarious fields of arts and culture-related fields of work.
In an age of overlapping skills and of interaction among the various disciplines, the students are offered a uniquely open space in which to produce and experiment, to pursue their own thoughts and discussions. Artistic and theoretical experimentation with ideas, questions and concepts, with materialities and media, as well as the possibility of networked production are fundamental components of the MA in Fine Arts offered by the ZHdK.
The MA in Fine Arts as system of concentrated spaces of experimentation furnishes a setting for learning and teaching that combines artistic and theoretical work with discursive, critical practice. The resultant atmosphere of productive, networked creativity is generated and supported by teachers and students alike.
Two special modalities of the MA in Fine Arts at ZHdK are the possibility to submit group applications and to be able to enter the program with a BA degree independent of its disciplinary background. We also reserve four places in the program for applicants proposing either a concrete artistic or theoretical research project that they want to pursue during their time at ZHdK.
