In the digital age, a wide variety of advertising media bombards us with new and improved images, type styles, and layouts; it seems that design is always recreating itself. It is essential for any professional artists/photographer to create an efficient and enjoyable showcase - a portfolio - to promote your work to a potentially unlimited audience.
Topics covered in this class will include fundamental visual principles and a discussion of the language of graphic design. Using traditional media (photography/video), each student will transform their portfolios using effective individual designs and layouts. We will concentrate on innovative solutions to convey unique concepts and ideas visually.
The class will also provide a number of resources to encourage students to apply for opportunities like grants, residencies, internships, open calls, and competitions.
Each student will leave the final class with:
· A high-resolution digital portfolio of a selected body of work in form of a CD-ROM or DVD, as a personal archive, for print output, prepress, for submission to publishers for magazine or book publications, or self published via online services (i.e. Apple’s iPhoto Books)
· A low-resolution digital portfolio in the form of a website or CD-ROM, for screen presentation and projections, for submission to editors, galleries, open calls, and competitions
· A visual identity that will represent the artist and his/her work in form of a logo or design concept
· A poster, postcard or invite, to promote your work or an upcoming exhibition, as well as stationery (business cards, labels, stickers, jackets for CDs and DVDs)
In this course, students will learn how to utilize computer graphics software such as Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, ImageReady, Dreamweaver, Flash, iLife and they will develop unique promotional projects that reflect their skills, accomplishments and professional goals in print and electronic media.
