Something New

  • Deadline:
    Oct. 25, 2009, midnight
  • Location:
    Chicago

Something New Chicago is a contemporary art show that will take place in the 24 hour period that makes up the date of November 11th, 2009. Curators Nikola Tosic (an internet artist and poet based in Serbia) and Sarah Weis (multi-media artist, performer and creative director of i^3 hypermedia) are currently trying to organize as many artworks as possible to take place all over the city of Chicago in this span of time. Submissions are still open: http://somethingnew.info

The most important aspect of this exhibit is that there is NO CENTRAL LOCATION except for Chicago itself (city limits). The website http://somethingnew.info will simply list every artwork, where exactly it is happening and when. Audience members should use this as a guide to experience the show. The outcome of this exhibit is based solely on the will of its participants. Our focus is on the act of creation, rather than the idea of a group of people together in one room, experiencing the same thing at once. The Something New audience can pick and choose where to go and what to see and we hope to raise the creative vibration of the city by mapping it out as a temporary freeform gallery.

A few dozen submissions have come in thus far, many from non-local and international artists who will set up situations with local collaborators and assistants. Pieces range from simple visual statements to public video projections, private performances, jam sessions and the reenactment of a famous picnic. We are looking to include as many Chicago artists as possible (and non-artists as well). Spread the word to your mom, co-worker, favorite bum or city official. This is not about being polished, it is about stimulating new creative energy.

This will be the second installment of Something New. (Something New London was organized by Tosic and Nic Roope in 2006.) This project is intended to take place in many cities for years to come.

Throughout the day, i^3 hypermedia will stream segments of the show on their counter-broadcast channel, http://i3hypermedia.com
