CHICKS ON SPEED at TAG

Chicks on Speed Exhibition, Lecture-Presentation and Workshop

In the context of their workshop at TAG, the Chicks on Speed will create a mini-collection together with students and artists. Participants of the workshop will gain insight in the complete process; from the initial concepts to production. Issues that will be addressed in this context are amongst others: brand spotting, the editorial perspective, developing design and assessing the resulting clothes.

Date > January 28th until February 25th
Opening > January 28th at 16:00 hrs
Open> Wed through Sat from 12:00-17:00 hrs

A great variety of techniques will be used in creating the collection. As a result, workshop participants will be asked to employ different approaches, such as collages, screen-printing and working with different materials. The resulting items will be displayed in a COS-led exhibition. The collection will also be on display during the COS gig at Het Paard van Troje.

During the opening of the exhibition, COS will lecture on ‘The Branding of Chicks on Speed’. At present, COS has developed into an independent company, including a record label, a fashion label and an art division that exhibits all over the world.

Background COS

Chicks on Speed, Sydney-born Alex Murray-Leslie, New Yorker Melissa Logan and Kiki Moorse from Munich first met at the Munich Art Academy in 1997. Initially, they started out as an art project that has gradually merged into the medium of music.

NME states: ‘If the Beastie Boys were here they’d think they were in heaven’ and ‘Chicks on Speed make Atari Teenage Riot look like the James Last Orchestra’.

Their debut album ‘Chicks on Speed will save you all’ collected the best tracks of their totally sold out 7”es, like the smash hits ‘Glamour Girl’, ‘Euro Trash Girl’ and ‘Warm Leatherette’. It contains cover-versions of the B52S, The Normal, Delta 5 or Malaria!, as well as originals by and co-operations with Gerhard Potuznik, Hecker or Die Golden Zitronen. Their releases on their label Chicks on Speed Records and live appearances all over the world already gave the all-girl trio a legendary reputation.

A lot has happened since: press-features from high gloss to underground-art-fanzines, a German Top20 single with the track ‘Kaltes Klares Wasser’, an appearence on German Top of the Pops, a sold-out North American tour, the US-only release of ‘the re-release of the un-release’ on K-records and the signing and release of the second album of feminist electronic punkband Le Tigre from New York. The chicks also co-operated with Dusseldorf’s instrumental pop outfit Kreidler, and released ‘Plugs Plus’, an album of French Laptop-pop-trio DAT Politics and ‘Fashion Rules!’, the first single from their album “99cents”.

2003 brought new releases on Chicks on Speed Records (Angie Reed and Kevin Blechdom) and another chicks-plosion with their album ‘99cents’. Their anthem ‘We don’t play guitars’ and their version of the Tom Tom Club classic ‘Wordy Rappinghood’ appeared on radio and television and filled clubs and dancefloors all over the world.

Releases in 2004 included the second DAT Politics album ‘Go Pets Go’, a solo album of the Raincoats singer Ana da Silva and an exciting collaboration album with Chicks on speed, Cristian Vogel and The Noheads. Again, the beaten path was completely ignored and all prior expectations were thoroughly frustrated.
