Knowing the World through Sound is an introductory event to An Ear to the Earth: A Festival of Music, Sound and Ecology, a citywide festival of music, sound and media art that explores how we relate to the natural world and human environments through sound. During a ten-day period in October 2006, the festival will offer concerts, installations, public art, encounters, soundwalks, and educational programs in locations across New York City. SCHEDULE:

10 - 11am
Workshop: New York Society for Acoustic Ecology
Members of the New York Society for Acoustic Ecology will discuss the citywide NYSoundmap Project and how to use the Googlemap API to create online interactive maps. The workshop will be led by Andrea Polli, Ned Mooney, Michelle Nagai, Andrea Williams, and others.

11am - noon
Workshop: Steven Feld
Ethnomusicologist and composer Steven Feld will discuss techniques of field recordings in the Bosavi Rainforest, Africa, Europe, and Japan.

1 - 1:45pm
Welcome and Keynote Speech
Author and performer David Rothenberg will introduce the keynote address by E. J. McAdams, Executive Director, New York City Audubon. Mr. McAdams will discuss the role of the arts in engaging the public in environmental issues.

2 - 3:30pm
Panel: Listening to the World
Media artist Andrea Polli will moderate and participate as a panelist. Other panelists will include UNESCO DigiArts Portal director Tereza Wagner; ethnomusicologist, author, and composer Steven Feld; and composer and sound artist Annea Lockwood.

4 - 5:30pm
Panel: Interspecies Communication
Sound artist Steven M. Miller, moderator, will introduce author and sound artist David Dunn; author and performer David Rothenberg; and E. J. McAdams, Executive Director, New York City Audubon.

8pm
Concert: Knowing the World Through Sound
Music by Miya Masaoka, Steven Feld, David Rothenberg, and David Dunn.
