FULL-TIME TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION IN SCULPTURE

The Department of Sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position to begin in August of 2023. Salary is competitive with peer institutions and commensurate with level of practice, scholarship and current academic research, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing.

DEPARTMENT PROFILE
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Department of Sculpture provides a unique, interdisciplinary experience that challenges students to develop a personal vision in their practice. Faculty and students in this department practice sculpture at its broadest level of meaning. The faculty bring a breadth of vision and experience that is reflected in the innovative curriculum and enhanced by the School’s expansive resources. The department encourages engagement with a diverse range of time-tested and experimental processes, and supports material engagement ranging from foundry work to living systems work in our laboratory garden.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Full-time faculty in the Department of Sculpture teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC. Faculty teach courses within the core undergraduate and graduate curriculum, designing courses that emphasize their own research interests and expertise, including conceptual approaches, craft-based investigations, digital advancements in sculpture, and courses at the intersection of art and design. Full-time faculty participate in the SAIC community through ongoing curricular development, departmental administration, and school governance.

QUALIFICATIONS
A master’s degree (MA or MFA) in sculpture, or a terminal degree in a relevant field of study is required. Teaching experience at the university level is required. The department seeks candidates with extensive experience in the field of sculpture, supported by a body of work and teaching relevant to contemporary sculpture. The ideal candidate is active in theorizing contemporary sculpture and aesthetics within the field.

We seek applicants with a broad range of research interests, which may include digital fabrication, figuration, technology/kinetics, and more. The successful candidate will contribute to the diversity of the school by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and material approaches in the field. We seek candidates who are eager to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates should demonstrate their experience with, or aptitude for, departmental administration.
