The OU School of Visual Arts (University of Oklahoma) invites qualified candidates to apply for a full-time, tenure track position as Assistant Professor of Sculpture, within the area of Art, Technology, & Culture. A secondary emphasis on Sound Art, situated at the intersection of sculpture, installation, and immersive environments, is desirable.

We seek an innovative, interdisciplinary artist and educator to work between the areas of Art, Technology, & Culture, Studio Art in Sculpture, and our Core Curriculum. Art, Technology, & Culture encompasses media arts, including photography, video, animation and emerging technologies. Studio Art courses in Sculpture include traditional media and practices, installation, and digital fabrication. Our Core Curriculum provides entry-level courses to all School of Visual Arts students including Core Studio II: Space and Time and Core Studio III: Technology.

The appointed faculty member will be expected to engage in academic and professional service, contribute to curriculum development, contribute to mentorship and advisement of students, participate in departmental MFA critiques and theses, and work collaboratively with other areas of the school (Design and Art History). Experience maintaining a sculpture shop, repairing machines and equipment, and implementing standard safety protocol is preferred. The 2/2 course load will encompass teaching at all levels in the program. The position, starting on August 15, 2022, offers a competitive salary, start-up funding, and research support.

The University of Oklahoma is dedicated to diversity, inclusivity, and equity. We highly encourage applications from a wide variety of ethnic, racial, religious, gender identity, and national backgrounds. A successful candidate will support a diverse student and faculty population with values of equity across many areas of artistic and professional practice.

The University of Oklahoma is a Carnegie-R1 comprehensive public research university known for excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement, serving the educational, cultural, economic and health-care needs of the state, region, and nation from three campuses: Norman, Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City and the Schusterman Center in Tulsa. OU enrolls over 30,000 students and has more than 2700 full-time faculty members in 21 colleges.

We acknowledge that the University of Oklahoma is located on the traditional lands of the Caddo Nation and the Wichita & Affiliated Tribes. This land was also once part of the Muscogee Creek and Seminole nations. It also served as a hunting ground, trade exchange point, and migration route for the Apache, Cheyenne, Comanche, Kiowa, and Osage nations. Today, 39 federally-recognized Tribal nations dwell in what is now the State of Oklahoma as a result of settler colonial policies designed to encapsulate and assimilate Indigenous peoples.

The University of Oklahoma’s main campus is located in the city of Norman, a vibrant university town of around 113,000 inhabitants with outstanding schools, amenities, and a low cost of living. It is around 30 miles south of Oklahoma City, a growing regional center of art, culture, and entertainment.

The University of Oklahoma is committed to achieving a diverse, equitable, and inclusive university community by embracing each person’s unique contributions, background and perspectives. The University of Oklahoma recognizes that fostering an inclusive environment for all, with particular attention to the needs of historically marginalized populations, is vital to the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of our institutional mission.
