POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Department of Visual Arts within the Division of Arts and Humanities at UC San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The Department invites applications for an artist with an art-practice focusing on media with a specialization in photography and lens-based practice.
The applicant's creative approach should be conceptually rich and conversant with the contemporary and emerging discourses of lens-based media art. The applicant should demonstrate a knowledge of analog and digital photographic practices, as well as an active engagement with evolving lens-based technologies. We are looking for an artist whose lens- based work might connect with the avant-gardes, contemporary art, and critical and expanded approaches to the discipline. Candidates should have an exhibition record demonstrating considerable recognition and teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
The successful candidate will teach in the department's undergraduate Media major, an area that spans analog and digital photography, film, digital media, and the history, theory and criticism of film and media. We are especially interested in hearing from artists who have a willingness and demonstrated capacity to work in an interdisciplinary context that includes undergraduate majors in studio, digital art, speculative design, art history, and media history and theory. The position also entails teaching in the Department's M.F.A. program and contributing to the Ph.D. programs in art history, theory and criticism and art practice. We seek candidates whose research, teaching, and service records demonstrate their capacity to contribute to diversity and inclusion.
Teaching will encompass the entire curricular range, from large undergraduate lecture courses to intermediate production and technique courses, advanced undergraduate production and critique courses, and graduate courses for MFA and Ph.D. Art Practice students. Courses would include such topics as Introduction to Digital Photography, Black and White Darkroom, Advanced Lighting and Printing, and thematic critique-based courses like Social Engagement and Photography, Strategies of the Self, and Pictorialism. All department faculty are expected to advise, work with, and serve on the committees of, MFA students in all areas and also work with, and serve on the committees of, Ph.D. students.
Rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience based on UC pay scales.
