  • Location:
Apply Online, Providence, Rhode Island, 02903, United States

As part of its “Race in Art & Design” cluster hire initiative, Rhode Island School of Design seeks to hire 10 new faculty in multiple disciplines to begin in Fall of 2021. We invite applications for four of the ten full-time faculty appointments, at the rank of Assistant or Associate, to commence fall 2021, with a focus on Liberal Arts, Foundation studies, and Art and Technology disciplines.
Central to the implementation of our evolving social equity and inclusion initiatives this cluster hire aims to grow our cross-institutional expertise in areas of race, colonization, decolonization, post-coloniality, and cultural representation, as well as in material practices of resistance.
We seek faculty whose research-based creative practice and/or scholarship addresses the lives, experiences, and cultural traditions of Black, Indigenous, and communities of color. The ideal candidates will not only be prepared to offer courses that both expand and seek to decolonize/challenge traditional liberal arts and art and design curricula and pedagogies, but also help expand the work of the Center for Social Equity and Inclusion as it engages our various constituencies and communities – both departmental and cross-institutional – in related dialogue and initiatives.
While we will prioritize those working in areas connected to the African American and African diasporas, Indigenous north American and Latinx communities, we encourage applications that engage any Indigenous or historically marginalized communities of color.
The ideal applicants for this cluster combine critical, creative, and/or material practices that engage Black, indigenous or Latinx epistemologies and address the systemic structures and power relations that shape disciplinary practices through a range of possible multidisciplinary foci.
The four positions for this subset of the cluster will be housed in the following departments:
• History, Philosophy, and Social Sciences
risd.edu/academics/history-philosophy-the-social-sciences
Areas of disciplinary focus might include: Africana studies, Indigenous studies, critical human geography, women and gender studies, history, philosophy, American Studies, digital humanities, political science, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and economics, among other related fields. We seek a scholar who works through critical race and de-colonial theory within their disciplinary field(s), and can apply their theoretical sophistication across disciplines.
• Literary Arts and Studies
risd.edu/academics/literary-arts-studies
Areas of focus might include African American Literatures and Criticism specifically the various dimensions of Blackness in America, diaspora studies, aesthetics, critical race and intellectual histories, Afro-futurism, non-traditional literary forms and speculative fiction, including expertise in visual narratives such as film, graphic novels and/or digital media.
• Theory and History of Art and Design and Experimental and Foundation Studies
(joint studio and liberal arts appointment)
thad.risd.edu
risd.edu/academics/experimental-and-foundation-studies
Areas of focus might include: mapping, memory and memorialization. Scholarly interest in museums, archives, memorials and public art – and their decolonial futures – would be beneficial, as would an investment in how histories of class, gender and ethnicity intersect with histories of Indigeneity and Blackness in an American/ Diasporic context.
• Digital + Media and Computation, Technology, and Culture
risd.edu/academics/digital-media
https://ctc.risd.edu
Areas of focus might include: sustained scholarly and artistic career at the intersection of technoscience, art, and design reaching beyond the Western canon with a focus on decoloniality and a critical approach to disciplinary biases. For instance, a studio practice that challenges the modern and colonial idea that technology speaks a universal language; embraces abolitionist imaginaries to transform the imperial premises of technology; or operates in the frictional space between global technological frameworks and local histories and material approaches.
