THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT AND URGENT, PLEASE CIRCULATE. please note that artists MUST have work available to forward for consideration and it should be hemispheric.
Desperately Seeking: contemporary artists who work on issues related to migrating devotions, especially imagery of the Virgin Mary. I’m editing a special journal issue and we need some more artist presentations. It’s actually a very beautiful venue and a nice showcase for artists (http://hemisphericinstitute.org/journal/home.php?issue=november%202006&language=English). Please let me know if you can think of anyone we could invite to participate.
This is the abstract:
How do religious practices travel across borders? What happens when a figure of devotion such as the Virgin Mary in one of her many local manifestations replicates herself to accompany devotees from a location as they migrate transnationally? How is the migration of a saint different from the migration of subaltern actors? How do such travels impact and transform devotional practices in the receiving location as well as the sending locations? What happens when two or more different objects of devotion cross paths on their travels? Perhaps more than examination of the circulation of religiosity in general, the movement of the Virgin Mary in her particular manifestations offers unique ways of understanding the human experience of migration and the important place of religiosity in transnational social processes.
