Spring Semester: 01/27/2020 - 05/22/2020
MEDP 23400 - Creative Code
Mo 7:00PM - 9:40PM
Course description:
Creative Code aims to fuse computer programming and creativity to produce media that embraces chance, glitch, system feedback and indeterminacy. In this course, students learn to create algorithms to produce sound, text and imagery that grow and changes over time. Through a series of targeted, incremental exercises students learn to use conditional statements and logical operators to produce work of surprising complexity inspired by natural processes. To provide a theoretical framework for creative exploration we will read several historical and contemporary articles on systems theory, cybernetics and neo-cybernetics as well as examine topics like natural language processing, Markov chains, remix strategies, synesthesia and generative art. In addition, we will analyze the work of poets, composers, artists, designers and architects who use systems in their process to develop the vocabulary for looking critically at these practices across disciplines.
