The Art and Technology Program in the School of Art at the The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) is currently accepting
applications for its two year Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) degree for the 2019-20 academic year. Art and Technology is a
studio based program that interrogates technology, art, media, performance and social participation within a broad cultural
dialogue.
We provide a faculty of full time and visiting artists who are dedicated to helping our students realize new technical and
artistic competencies while enhancing their critical thinking skills. Our pedagogy is specifically designed to expand and
transform one's art making through a rigorous process of applied practice and creative research.
The program promotes a supportive learning environment through individual and shared work space, digital media labs and
material fabrication facilities. The program is aligned with the other Art School programs and with the Center for Integrated
Media. The Center is a concentration of classes and workshops that advance the unique mission of CalArts by supporting
cross-disciplinary practices and interschool collaborations. The Art and Technology Program strongly supports diversity
within its student body through an international and domestic outreach.
The curriculum encompasses critiques, technical classes, academic seminars, independent studies, classes in cultural theory
and a strong emphasis on individual mentoring. Each student meets frequently with their mentor for discussion, feedback and
evaluation during their two years of study. The critiques and seminars are designed so the students can actively investigate
current social, political and aesthetic issues that inhabit the multiple intersections of art and technology.
Recent graduates have produced work resulting in generative art, object based media, digital video installation, virtual
reality, augmented reality, interactive interventions, multimedia performance, kinetic sculpture, post-internet art, sound art
and socially networked educational initiatives.
