The Processing Foundation is hiring a part-time Education Community Director!

  • Deadline:
    Nov. 16, 2018, 11:11 a.m.
  • Location:
Our team has members based in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, and Berlin, and we work together online, and in person when we can. The Director of Education will work primarily remotely, and can be based anywhere.

The Processing Foundation’s mission is to promote software literacy within the visual arts, and visual literacy within technology-related fields — and to make these fields accessible to diverse communities. The Education Community Director will lead the development of the Foundation’s educational outreach, which includes but is not limited to: expanding the existing community of educators; guiding the focus of major events such as Processing Community Day 2020; managing the Foundation’s online pedagogic resources, tools, and curriculum; and assisting with ongoing education-centered events and initiatives.

A key component is creating a network of “Node Cities” that expand on these goals within their own local communities. K12 education is emphasized, as well as alternative education models such as informal learning, self-teaching, and workshop-style public programming. Currently, we have educational initiatives with the Knight Foundation and the New York Department of Education.

The Director of Education Outreach will work closely with the Board of Directors, the Director of Advocacy, the Program Manager, and other collaborators. We are an organization that, rather than using a top-down model of command, values the work of the collective equally. For the role of Director of Education, we are looking for someone who is excited to develop a vision and plan of action to realize a new dimension of the Processing Foundation’s commitment to education. We want someone who will lead the project with imagination, initiative, and independence, and we are committed to supporting the trajectory of this.

The Director of Education Outreach’s responsibilities will include:

Educational programming (50%)

Develop and lead educational initiatives and partnerships
Lead planning and logistics of major events and programming such as Processing Community Day and “Node Cities” network
Mentor Processing Foundation Teaching fellows
Oversee and continue developing Educational Institution Membership
General program management (25%)

Lead the administration for Google Summer of Code
Collaborate with the Director of Advocacy for editorial and writing tasks of documentation related to education initiatives
Assist in developing and managing the Processing Foundation website
Education Portal (25%)

Lead the development of an education portal for the Processing Foundation website
Draft and finalize educational resource materials for portal and Github
Oversight of education portal
The ideal candidate has strong management and communication skills, and a commitment to promoting diversity and access in arts and technology fields. This is a half-time salaried position for an average of 20 hours per week; salary is based on experience. The position does not include benefits. It is a one-year contract position with the possibility to extend. Our team has members based in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, and Berlin, and we work together online, and in person when we can. The Director of Education will work primarily remotely, and can be based anywhere.

The Processing Foundation provides equal employment opportunities to all without regard to race, ethnicity, color, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, or genetics. Candidates from groups generally underrepresented in the arts or tech fields are especially encouraged to apply.

To apply, please send a cover letter and resume including contact information for two references to foundation@processing.org with subject: “Director of Education Outreach application” by Friday, November 16, 2018.
