‘Spaces, Screens, Sounds, and Rabbits’, the DIS 2004 exhibition, represents an effort on the part of the DIS organisers to open up dialogue not just between industry and academe, but to bring artists into the heart of that dialogue as well. Exhibition curators Hyun-Yeul Lee (MIT Boston) and Catriona Macaulay (University of Dundee) were taken aback by the enthusiastic response to the initial call - over 50 submissions were received. The standard was extremely high and it was interesting that traditional screen-based work was less in evidence than had been anticipated - a reflection of wider trends in the industry no doubt. The enthusiasm shown by the artists selected for actually attending in person has convinced Hyun and Catriona of the wisdom of mounting this event. Hyun and Catriona have put together an exciting, diverse and international programme. In doing so they had to explore a variety of forms of distributed working (covering both sides of the Atlantic as they do). Trusty old email has proved to be very reliable, particularly for those late night/early evening ‘chats’.
