MFA in Art @ UC Irvine
The graduate program in Art offers a generously-funded and rigorous interdisciplinary three-year course of study. The program provides a thorough and intensive professional training for students wishing to pursue careers in the field of contemporary art, and it emphasizes experimental and interdisciplinary approaches to art making, while providing a solid grounding in various disciplinary mediums and post-studio practices.

Electronic Art and Design is a subspecialty within the program, in which students critically engage with the contemporary techno-social context as subject and medium. EAD students deploy computation, electronics, and cutting-edge media technologies in conjunction with other methods and materials.

Successful applicants will join a dynamic community of around thirty students working in EAD, video and digital filmmaking, photography, new genres, sculpture, and painting. All MFA students take part in a curriculum combining seminars, intensive critique courses, and independent study aimed to integrate theory, practice, and research. A dynamic Visiting Artist lecture series is a key component of the MFA curriculum, providing students with the opportunity to conduct studio visits with world-renowned artists, critics and curators. Graduate students have opportunities to exhibit in three professional galleries.

As a leading research university, UC Irvine is an unparalleled resource in all disciplines for artists to enhance their practice. Some students pursue emphases in in Critical Theory, Gender and Sexualities Studies, or Visual Studies in addition to their primary graduate degree in Art.

Successful US applicants typically receive full academic financial support. Successful international applicants also receive very generous (usually full) academic financial support for the first year and full academic support for the second and third years. The Department is committed to providing as much funding as possible to assist all students in the completion of the degree. Each graduate student is appointed to six Teaching Assistantships, and some also teach in the Summer Academy, an outreach program for high school students. Students also take advantage of the numerous grant and fellowship opportunities available through the School of the Arts and other external agencies.
