  • Deadline:

  • Location:
    Illinois State University Normal, IL

The College of Fine Arts at Illinois State University seeks to hire a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor to join its team of interdisciplinary digital arts / graphic design faculty beginning August 16, 2018. The successful candidate will teach courses within the Program in Arts Technology and the Graphic Design program in the School of Art. The salary for this nine-month position is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

We seek digital creatives and designers with strong visual design sensibilities who move fluidly between mediums. These mediums may include animation and motion graphics, 3D modelling, VR environments, data visualization, interactive design, UI/UX, mobile application design and development, and print-based graphic design. The successful candidate will join our faculty prepared with progressive ideas for instruction, ready to create and teach courses highlighting the bridge between Arts Technology and Graphic Design to serve students in both areas.

The Program in Arts Technology explores where the fine arts intersect with digital technologies; where traditional boundaries dissolve and overlap into new forms of creative expression.  Our highly flexible and dynamic curriculum is taught by a faculty that blends media and disciplines from all fine arts including music, art, theatre, and dance. Existing curriculum includes such topics as sound design, virtual and augmented reality, software programming, audio synthesis, Arduino, 3D modelling, web design, motion graphics, interactive installations, and web video.

Similarly, the Graphic Design sequence in the School of Art challenges students to demonstrate strong methodological and typographic skills, innovative conceptual thinking, and design research across multiple platforms of 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, and interactive work. Our evolving curriculum includes topics such as semiotics, image making, design process, web design and coding, complex information design, environmental design, time-based compositions, branding, and client-based projects.

We are dedicated to the goal of building a culturally diverse and pluralistic faculty committed to teaching and working in multicultural environments and strongly encourages applications from minorities, women, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. We especially seek applicants with a body of innovative work that challenges traditional academic and cultural delineations of artistic production.

Candidates for this position must be comfortable teaching all levels of cross-disciplinary digital creativity for both undergraduate and graduate students. Responsibilities of this position include teaching three courses per semester, continued scholarly/creative activity in the appropriate field, and university service.

Requirements include the appropriate terminal degree in the candidate’s field of study. ABD candidates with expected completion by May 2019 will be considered. A strong background in digital creativity and design, and university-level teaching experience are also required. Evidence of innovative professional activity is essential. State law mandates demonstrable oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position.

Review of applications will begin January 2, 2018, and continue until the position is filled. To ensure full consideration, please complete an online faculty application for posting number 0710008 at https://jobs.ilstu.edu/, and attach a single PDF file that contains the following:
1. Letter of application
2. Curriculum Vitae
3. A list of three references with contact information
