Squeaky Wheel Film & Media Arts Center invites visiting and regional artists and researchers to apply for a residency program exploring the moving image, time-based media, and emergent technologies. The Workspace Residency is a project-based residency for artists and researchers working in media art offered by Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center in Buffalo, NY. Available for applicants from Buffalo and across the U.S., the residency connects artists and researchers with resources, time, and studio space to encourage the creation of new work and make progress on ongoing projects. This year Squeaky Wheel also offers a special residency dedicated for one artist to create a site-specific installation or performance at Buffalo’s Silo City. The Summer 2017 session will take place August 5–August 27, 2016.
Selected applicants will have tailored access to equipment, technical consultations, and facilities from Squeaky Wheel and our Workspace Residency partners Buffalo Game Space, Buffalo Lab, and Silo City. A $900 stipend will be awarded to each resident. Limited travel and housing funds will be available on a competitive basis for select applicants. The facilities, gear, and expertise offered with this residency program lends itself to the creation of a wide variety of work including: film, video, virtual reality, game development, 3D printing, sonic arts, installation, performance, and more. Participants can mix and match these benefits according to their needs.
During their time here, residents will also have the opportunity for one-on-one critique sessions, and will be invited to a variety of site visits and other activities exploring Buffalo, its community, and history.
The Summer 2017 Session will take place between August 5–27, 2017.
Applications are due at 11:59pm, June 5, 2017.
There are three kinds of residencies:
ARTIST RESIDENCY – Artists are invited to propose the production of new or in-progress media artworks. Works can engage with film, video, virtual reality, game development, 3D printing, sonic arts, or other forms, based on the technology and expertise offered by Squeaky Wheel and Workspace partners, Buffalo Game Space and Buffalo Lab. Artists-in-residence will have opportunities to share their work with other residents and the community and engage in local activities.
RESEARCH RESIDENCY – Scholars, curators, writers, and theorists are invited to propose new or in-progress research in the area of emergent media arts practices towards the publication of critical texts, scholarly research, or production of curatorial projects. The researcher-in-residence will have opportunities to share their research with resident artists and the community, and engage in local activities.
SILO CITY RESIDENCY – Artists are invited to propose a site-specific installation or performance at Silo City – the historic grain elevators located along the Buffalo River, a vast vertical, circular space with tremendous reverberative qualities. The residency supports one selected artist to present their work in one of the silos on August 26, 2017. The resident will have scheduled access to Silo City grounds and are encouraged to utilize new media, sound, and emergent technologies within the space. Travel to and from Silo City is not provided by the residency; thus, access to a vehicle is highly recommended. More information on Silo City can be found on the application page.
