Clinical Assistant Professor - Physical Computing

The University at Buffalo, State University of New York invites applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor position in the Department of Media Study (DMS). The department seeks applicants whose creative research and practice span the areas of physical computing, interaction design and creative coding.

DMS acknowledges the many facets that computing culture encompasses today, ranging from singular responsive systems reacting to specific inputs to networks of cloud connected bots harvesting data from people and places. As such, applicants with broad experience in the conceptualization, design, development and implementation of complex computational systems that engage a range of human, social, environmental and material conditions are encouraged to apply.

We especially seek media artists with a conceptually-driven practice capable of intersecting with the diverse array of practices the department represents. DMS is renowned for its pioneering contributions to experimental film, video and sound art, theory and practice. Today the department is led by an award winning internationally active faculty with expertise in experimental film, video, sound, robotics, social media, games, interactive fiction, documentary practices, digital poetics and critical spatial practices.

Competitive applicants will have a strong exhibition record, demonstrated fluency in contemporary media culture, and a commitment to engage in the evolving re-definition of computing culture in the 21st century.

DMS has graduate programs at the MA, MFA and Ph.D. levels as well as an undergraduate BA program. Candidates must be able to teach and direct work at all of these levels. The teaching course load is three courses a semester as well as a department service package equivalent to one course per semester. Minimum requirements: MFA, PhD or equivalent in Art, Engineering, Media Study or a related field, conferred by time of appointment.
