APPLICATION:
Kala Art Institute has recently partnered with Savoir Faire to create a fantastic opportunity for all artists interested in creating a custom edition with Kala’s Master Printer Unai San Martin. For 30 years Savoir-Faire has been working to bring the finest art and stationery supplies the world has to offer to American artists. Kala Art Institute’s mission is to help artists sustain their creative work over time through its Artist-in-Residence and Fellowship Programs, and to engage the community through exhibitions, public programs and education.
Unai San Martin works with artists and outside clients to produce high-quality custom editions of original artwork. He attended Morley College of London and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Unai worked as a printer in Madrid, and moved to the United States in the late nineties. He has had many shows in both US and Spain, and developed a career as an artist, printer, and platemaker for the artistic community. His work is in museums and private collections. Unai first joined Kala in 1998 as an Artist-in-Residence, and has developed many photogravure projects and workshops – working with artists, helping them find their own voice.
The final printed edition will consist of 35 hand pulled intaglio prints (30 within the edition and 5 proofs) of the winners desired artwork. 3 of the 5 proofs will be kept by Kala for the permanent collection. The awardee will also be given 3 free Individual meetings (up to 10 hours total) in order to discuss and proof the project with Unai. Your submitted images should be representative of your current style as well as representative of the piece you potentially would be creating with Unai.
Artists working in all media invited to apply with five images. Application fee: $30 or join Friends of Kala Membership Program at the Artist/Student level ($45) to waive the application fee, contact Ellen Lake in the Kala Development Department at ellen@kala.org or 510-841-7000. You will receive instructions for how to submit your application materials.
For questions about the online application guidelines, e-mail Amber Hoy at amber@kala.org. Selected artists will be announced at www.kala.org on February 1, 2017.
