The Art and Technology Program in the School of Art at the The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) is currently accepting applications for its two year Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree for the 2017–18 academic year. Art and Technology is a studio based program that interrogates technology, art, media, performance and social participation within a broader cultural dialogue.
We provide a faculty of full time and visiting artists who are dedicated to helping our students realize new technical and artistic competencies while enhancing their critical thinking skills. It is a pedagogy that is specifically designed to expand or transform one's art making through a rigorous process of applied practice and creative research.
The program promotes a studio based learning environment that contains individual and shared work space, digital media labs and material fabrication facilities. The program is aligned with the other Art School programs and with the Center for Integrated Media. The Center is a concentration of classes and workshops that advance CalArts' unique mission of supporting cross-disciplinary practices and collaborations.
The curriculum encompasses group critiques, technical and critical seminars, independent studies, classes in cultural theory and a strong emphasis on individual mentoring. Each student meets frequently with their mentor for discussion, feedback and evaluation during their two years of study. The critiques and seminars are designed so the students can actively investigate current social, political and aesthetic issues that inhabit the intersection of art and technology.
Recent graduates have produced work resulting in generative art, object based media, digital video installation, interactive interventions, cross-disciplinary performance, kinetic sculpture, post-internet art, sound art and socially networked educational initiatives.
The Art and Technology Program strongly supports diversity within its student body through an international and domestic outreach.
