Father’s To I’ve To Father’s
An opera for SMS message by Banrei and Claire Molek.
Sound artist and curator Banrei and Claire Molek create an opera delivered by SMS, about a person trying to remember his father's dance.
The rhythm and melody of the piece are created by the communal vibrating and ringing of phones against the bodies of participants. The allegory is delivered inside the text as short messages, links, and media. Texts occur up to twice a day for the duration of the work between May 1 - May 15, 2016
The names of participants/ticket holders are embedded into the work using a Python-based algorithm, which become woven together to form abstract poems sung by the characters. All of the participants become an essential material in the work, a mutually created embodiment of the otherwise invisible participants sharing a conceptual space.
The box office for the work is located on Indiegogo, both for the sense of transparency of its audience and the process by which the work becomes commodified. This is not a fundraiser, this is a work of art which is conscious of its patronage.
