Tools of Resilience at SPACE is a series of 5 workshops that aim to turn urban hardship into de- sign adventure through speculative design practices and making. This workshop will bring together self-motivated multidisciplinary practitioners to encourage skills exchange and network building within a critical framework between personal research and professional development.
This workshop series is about using design thinking to design yourself and your practice. It will involve the prototyping of artefacts and the development of skills such as mapping, carpentry, met- alworking, use of digital resources, network agility, photography and videography. The series will celebrate process and outcome, culminating with an exhibition at the White Building.
What are the threats that make the professional lives of creatives in London just as challenging as survival in the desert? Inspired by Chameaux D’Acier, the life-saving transformation of a Citro- en 2CV that broke down in the Western Sahara desert into a working motorcycle, we will explore these narratives into the context of London as a megacity desert.
SPACE designer Marco Monterzino will guide this series, responding to your practice to develop a place of discussion and exchange through the creation of a tangible collection of Tools of Re- silience. A toolset that enables you to navigate the high degree of uncertainty and fluidity of Lon- don’s creative market. According to cognitive scientists George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, the way we use our body structures the way we think. The act of making can then provide a starting point to explore and prototype resilient tools and behaviours.
The series is designed to develop your practice and resilience through challenges, briefs, inspira- tional material and skills exchange. You can attend to individual sessions, or you can sign up to the 4-session programme and allow yourself to develop a resilient practice progressively through the platform.
