MID-ATLANTIC POPULAR | AMERICAN CULTURE ASSOCIATION
CFP–CALL FOR PAPERS
FASHION AND MATERIAL CULTURE
2007 ANNUAL CONFERENCE
November 2-4, 2007, Radisson Plaza-Warwick Hotel Philadelphia
Attire and fashion condition and are conditioned by contemporary popular culture across its "high/low" territories: from designer (Giorgio Armani) to TV (Oscar Awards) to cinema (The Devil Wears Prada or Marie Antoinette) to music (Madonna) to the art world (artist, artwork, critic, art dealer, consultant, collector, auctioneer, curator, museum director) to photography (Richard Avedon) to printed media (Vogue) to World Wide Web (Gucci) to Wall Street to Street Culture—to name only a few iconic instances of style and the costume arena. In being so, apparel remains to be analyzed either on its own as an aspect of design and aesthetics through its formalism and historicity, or sociologically in relation to the "high/low" polarities of the past or present, from such perspectives as “class,” “ethnicity” or “gender,” often unfolding paradoxical cultural phenomena. Proposals that attempt to either historicize or critically examine aspects of fashion within specific or broader contexts are equally welcome. Please send a one-page proposal, CV & audio-visual needs to:
