The Banff Centre for the Arts and Semiotexte Present:
Flesh Eating Technologies - An Edge-of-Science Symposium
December 6-7, 1997 * 9 a.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday
Fee: $75 (Students $50)
Why, as we become more technologically advanced, does our culture seem
to be increasingly more barbaric? This symposium, a follow-up event to a
seminar held last year, will explore this question and feature
screenings and presentations. Film makers, artificial life experts,
cultural critics, artists, scientists and other thinkers will take a
look at late 20th century fantasies about technology, the human body,
threat, pleasure, death and desire. Join us for a critical engagement
with the crazy side of millennium fever and an exploration of Flesh
Eating Technologies.
Throughout the weekend three currents will overlap: the philosophy of
science; barbarism at end of the twentieth century; and hypertechnology.
Invited writers and artists will speak about these currents and their
work, presenting a collage of ideas about science, theory and art.
Selections from these writers and artists will be part of a new volume
of Semiotexte, a leading popular culture publication, a collaboration
with the Banff Centre for the Arts.
