OLGA KOMAROVA-TOBRELUTS. Born in Leningrad in 1970, I have been working
with computer graphics and video installations for about 10 years and
designed about 100 installations. I've also shot many films and took
part in more than 200 exhibitions.
PURPOSE OF THE INSTALLATION
Nowadays the territory where a human being reaches harmony with him- or
herself can be defined as the most important space. Analysing this
light-installation and building it up logically I, bove all, thought of
the necessity of its existance. After selecting various important
components of our life I came to the concusion that in solving this
problem one should use city space and water underworld space as the most
effective ones.
EXPLANATION
I live in one of the most beautiful cities of the world, in St.
Petersburg. It's a city of wonderful architecture and a city of rain. It
is often called a mirage-city, 'an underwater Atlantida'. There are many
rivers an canals here and floods are frequent. From time to time through
the rain-mantle or misty haze ornaments of the houses resemble plants of
the underwater world, while cathedrals, monuments and palaces rise up
like optical illusions before you. All this creates a unique feeling of
peace, close to the felicity of death when fright, cold and hunger step
back.
Trying to design an installation tuning the public in to the wave
already caught by the author led to amazing results.
This installation was demonstrated in the Planetarium and was visited by
a lot of people who could find a moment of peace within its space. To my
amazement not only middle-aged people enjoyed it but elderly people and
children as well.
INSTALLATION LAY-OUT
Video installation is placed in a square room where a video film is
projected on each wall. The film shows seaweed moving as the water
flows. Seaweed movement is synchronized with the sound of sea-breakers.
With the help of computer processing one can see reflections of
beautiful architecture which constantly appears and disappears like a
mirage.
TO RUT THE INSTALLATION TOGETHER I NEED
4 videoprojectors, 4 white screens, a source of stereophonic sound
(tape-recorder, amplifier, acousic system).
