Pavilion of the XX th. Century
Student Design Dialogue/Competition
1997/98
Students of the fifth year program in architectural design of the
Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade call for international
dialogue
The Challenge
Pavilion of the XX th century, or towards the "trans-international
architecture" is a challenging theme marking the end of the century and
of millennium as the time for summing up the complex experiences of the
past while envisaging the future. The theme is widely opened for
different interpretations and an opportunity to overcome the limits of
time and space. World exhibitions and history of architecture prove in
many ways that architecture has always been the area where declarative
manifestos for the future are projected. Therefore century limit is just
a provocation for the widening of approach, for concept as the essence
of the answer, but also for the meaningful and attractive form as the
result.
The Program
Instead of the programme, we offer pairs of parallels as initial points
based both on general and very personal cultural experience.
beginning of the century - end of the century
international style - transinternational architecture
the era of machines - the era of computers
Bauhaus, world exhibitions - virtual reality
contextual - universal
particular - general
evolution - revolution
utopia - heterotopia
The Site
The site presented is situated in the picturesque riverside area of the
New Belgrade. In the sixties the site was dedicated to the Museum of
Revolution. The building was never completed, and there are still some
remaining of it like the concrete base of around 90 x90 square meters.
The preservation of the base is not obligatory.
