ARTEMISIA GALLERY LAUNCHES "MEME ME: IDENTITY IN THE REPLICATION AGE"
"Meme Me: Identity in the Replication Age," is a recent project curated
and organized by Artemisia Gallery (Chicago) in conjunction with the
International Symposium for the Electronic Arts (ISEA'97).
The project, which involved two fluxus-inspired performance evenings and
an exhibition of electronic-based installations by ISEA'97 artists
culminated in an on-line web project located at:
http://www.enteract.com/~artemisi/projects/web/meme.html.
Although international in scope, the majority of the artists
participating in "Meme Me" are from the United States and Canada.
ada'web (nyc), Interaccess (Toronto, Canada) and StudioXX (Montreal,
Canada) are some of the digital galleries that assisted the gallery in
its curatorial process. Works by Canadian web artists Greg Garvey, Petra
Mueller, Jeanette Lambert and Raquel Rivera are featured, as well as web
art projects by Keith Tyson (England), and American artists Jenny
Holzer, Katherine Isbister, Nino Rodriguez and Rose Stasuk.
Artemisia is a Chicago-based, internationally recognized, not-for-profit
cooperative gallery founded in 1972 which seeks to emphasize the role of
women in the arts. Artemisia provides educational services to the art
community and supports emerging and alternative artists. Recently,
Artemisia began a technological initiative with the creation of
Artemisiaweb, which has allowed the gallery to expand programming into
virtual space via curated on-line exhibitions. Artemisia's curatorial
committee views the world wide web as a site for cross-border
information exchange, display, and art-making activities.
