The excitment of technology revolves around words like powerful, fast,
robust, and above all, new. MAINTENANCE / WEB examines the other, uglier
side of technology. It examines the routine, laborious, painful, and
obsolescent qualities of technology that make it a lasting entity in our
society. Anyone who has updated databases, debugged script, programmed a
VCR, or spell- checked a long document can attest to tedium
technological progress can engender.
The setting for this routine is the fictional spacecraft Green Fields in
which three space workers endlessly repair equipment, grow food, and
undertake tedious research. The narrative of MAINTENANCE / WEB is
structured on two levels. The overarching scheme is that of a space
opera where the viewer experiences MAINTENANCE / WEB through the eyes of
the three characters. The specifics of the lab workers use. In this
sense the tools become equally important characters with their own
needs, uses, and drives.
