NEW COMPUTER ARTS FELLOWSHIP CATEGORY ANNOUNCED
The New York Foundation for the Arts announces the creation of a new
"Computer Arts" category within its Artists' Fellowship Program. Awards
of $7,000 will be made to artists for whom the use of the computer is
intrinsic to their work's creation, presentation or understanding. The
deadline for submissions is October 2, 1996. Awards will be announced in
Spring 1997.
Fellowships are awarded through a peer-panel review process based on a
recent selection of the artist's work. Examples of work anticipated in
the Computer category include 2D, 3D, interactive, installation and
internet/www art projects as well as immersive virtual environments,
hypertext documents and computer-employed images, audio and video.
Submission of work in digital formats is encouraged. Slides, video and
audio formats may also be submitted.
The Computer Arts category was established on the recommendation of a
rotating board of advisors (two artists representing each of the 16
discipline areas). In the previous funding cycle, artists were able to
apply with digital materials in all categories. Based on the volume and
merit of the work submitted, and a growing recognition of the needs of
computer artists to be judged by their own peers, the board proposed the
establishment of a new category as a separate discipline.
In the twelve years since its inception, the Foundation's Artists'
Fellowships program has awarded over $12 1/2 million to almost 1,800
different creative artists living and working in New York State.
Categories in the upcoming year in addition to Computer Art include
Crafts, Performance Art/Emergent Forms, Film, Nonfiction Literature,
Poetry, Printmaking/Drawing/Artists' Books and Sculpture. Applicants
must be New York State residents, must be 18 years of age or older, and
may not be a graduate or undergraduate student enrolled in a degree
program at the time of the application.
