The San Jose Office of Cultural Affairs and Aviation Department are seeking an artist or artist team to design, fabricate, and install an artwork to be suspended from the ceiling structure of the San Jose International Airport’s North Concourse concession area. This opportunity is open to United States residents.
BACKGROUND
The Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport is the global community’s gateway to Silicon Valley and San Jose. The Airport Public Art Program will create a signature identity for the Airport and San Jose that reinforces and enhances its reputation as a international leader in technology and innovation.
The Airport Public Art Program is guided by the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport Public Art Master Plan that creates a strategic framework for a unified program of Art & Technology that will showcase Silicon Valley’s creativity and diversity. Public art at the airport will use the tools and technologies developed in Silicon Valley to provide a portal to the community, highlighting the important histories that are the foundations of San Jose’s place in today’s global economy.
Art & Technology is defined broadly as:
Art that uses technology
Art that is inspired by technology
Art that is developed with technology
Art that comments on technology
The North Concourse has been designed to facilitate the creation of art & technology projects. The multidisciplinary team of Gorbet+Banerjee has created a plan that outlines opportunities to integrate public art into the North Concourse, including design of infrastructure to support a rotating program of artworks, and recommendation of sites for short term and long term artwork installations. The North Concourse Concessions Suspended Artwork is categorized as a long-term (of a permanent nature) installation.
