The LAB is proud to present Similar/Same, an exhibition by 1999
artist-in-residence Rebeca Bollinger. Similar/Same features new work
created during her six-week residency at The LAB, based on a process of
experimentation with digital media and image banks found on the
internet. The exhibition, the first solo show presented at The LAB since
our October 1995 relocation to the Redstone Building, opens with a
reception from 6 to 9 PM on Friday, August 20 and continues through
Saturday, September 18, 1999, with a closing reception that day from 3
to 6 PM. Gallery hours are Wednesdays through Saturdays from 12 noon to
5 PM. This project is made possible in part by a National Endowment for
the Arts' Creation and Presentation grant and an in-kind donation by
Interval Research Corporation.
Similar/Same is an installation that will use thousands of pre-existing
public domain photographs in a variety of ways to examine the impact of
technology on representation and communication. Bollinger's work
synthesizes existing digital materials into new forms and explores ways
in which information machines and systems can be exploited to produce
residual, left-over information. In Similar/Same, that residue becomes
the work. For further information, call The LAB at (415) 864-8855.
