Call for Papers: The Genius 2000 Conference, August 28-29 1999

Call for Papers:

The Genius 2000 Conference 99 is now accepting abstracts for papers for
our upcoming conference on the theme of "The Mechanical Reproduction of
Age in the Art of Work." Abstracts should be 1-2 pages, and should
include the author's return address, professional credentials, and prior
publications.

The issue of age is central to any cultural construct. As Benedict
Anderson so aptly described in "Imagined Communities," one of the first
missions of any nation is to prove its ancient (if unacknowledged)
heritage in a mass medium. The reproduction of age is an ongoing
activity in the current "computer technology" sector of the humanistic
disciplines, and the goal of our conference is to support and encourage
a rich and nuanced cross-section of this cultural river.

The Conference will be held August 28 and 29 at the McDonald's at
Vandalia and University Ave. in West St. Paul, Minnesota. The site is
within one mile of Interstate 94 and the Amtrak station, and close to
lodging at Days Inn, Best Western, and the Radisson Metrodome. Nearby
attractions abound in the vital modern metropolis of the Twin Cities
Metro Area. Local spots of interest include Grand Avenue in St. Paul,
Stadium Village (featuring the historic Oak Street Cinema), Dinkytown,
and Nye's Polonaise Room. Downtown Minneapolis offers some of the
hippest nightlife in the United States, at clubs with storied histories
like First Avenue, Lee's Liquor Bar, the Gay 90's, and Quest.

The conference will also provide day passes to the Minnesota State Fair
to all attending conferees. The Fair has been providing food and fun
for everyone since the founding of the State in 1856. The Fairgrounds
are less than one mile from the conference site and make a perfect place
for ethnographic studies of contemporary culture. Millenium-based
points of interest will of course lend this year's Fair an historic
flavor.

Papers should confront the theme of the Mechanical Reproduction of Age
in the Art of Work from a contemporary viewpoint.

Topics of special interest include:

1. Immortality and the Internet
2. The Fate of the Artistic Worker
3. The Nature of Mind/the Mind of Nature
4. Zen and the Brain
5. Revolution in the Late Nineties
6. Class Concerns in New Media Brahminism
7. Henry David Thoreau

The entry fee is $0.99 US, and can be mailed to the Genius 2000
Conference at 360 Grand Ave, PMB 419, Oakland, CA, 94610. The deadline
for submissions is August 13, 1999. Abstracts should be sent as
attachments to nmherman@aol.com. Acceptances will be announced on line
August 14, via e-mail and at our website www.geocities.com/~genius-2000.

Prizes will be awarded for Best Male Presenter, Best Female Presenter,
and the Golden Palm for Career Achievement. Winning papers and ten
runners-up will be displayed at the Conference Website. The top three
papers will each receive a cash award totalling one-third of the
conference's receipts; grants and support are welcome and can be
arranged by contacting radio@aurorablue.org. If passes to the State
Fair are desired, please contact us at least one week before the
conference.
