Byte Sized
A commission opportunity for digital artists to make an innovative and
exploratory work that must exist and operate within 1 Mega Byte of
computer memory space. There is an open theme, with the emphasis being
on discovering and exploring the creative boundaries and possibilities
that now exist for you as an artist working with digital tools.
The significance of 1MB is as a confined space, and one that can utilise
a multitude of presentation and distribution techniques. On the one hand
computers are getting faster with claims of bigger and better
possibilities, but the Internet and new software capabilities question
this with new achievements made within very small amounts of memory.
Bigger is not always better, and Byte Sized seeks to commission artists
to explode these possibilities and present life with our computers in
new lights. It is about what can be done with little space but hundreds
of tools, approaches and understandings.
PROJECT AIMS
+ To encourage and support the creation of new innovative and
exploratory digital artworks.
+ To develop the creative, critical and professional practice of UK
artists.
+ To profile and situate these artists within contemporary digital arts
practice.
+ To create dialogue and exchange between regional and national digital
arts practitioners
ARTISTS BRIEF
'Byte Sized' is about digital tools and digital spaces, and the creative
and communicative possibilities with them. You are asked for proposals
that explore and demonstrate the possibilities within 1 Mega Byte of
digital memory in the context of current critical debates and
technological developments.
There are 6 commissions, 2 being given specifically for works involving
the moving image. Other than this there is an open theme.
Integral to the project is the collaborative dialogue and exchange
between all 6 artists throughout the research & development, production
and exhibition stages of the project, and proposals that seek to involve
collaboration between specific artists are welcomed.
