The Machida City Art of Graphic Arts, Tokyo (MCMOGATK) is now welcoming
entries for its art project "Art on the Net 1999" under the theme "The
Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction."

As an attempt to define the relationship between technology and art,
MCMOGATK has been sponsoring the Internet Art project featuring VRML,
streaming media and various other technologies. This year, under the
theme "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction," we are
welcoming all types of artworks that use technologies applicable to the
Internet.

Currently, the Internet Art is a hot item at various art festivals. As
its popularity keeps rising, we have to redefine how the Internet as
media is related to the concept of art. "Can many of the artworks on the
Internet really be considered art?" "If so, in what context?" These are
the questions we have been posing to understand the status of art and
the Internet.

In fall 1999, MCMOGATK is hosting an on-line exhibition for artworks
that respond to these questions raised. If you are interested, please
