announcements database

After forwarding an announcement to RHIZOME RAW and then noticing that
the announcement's deadline had already past, Dooley Le Cappellaine
wrote:

Yes very annoying. I go to several sites to attempt to get information
about upcoming events which would be appropriate venues for my work. As
much as possible I try to pass this information onto other "new media"
artists at RHIZOME; I think it's a more generous and meaningful
contribution than rabbiting on about my opinions. Very OFTEN the
information is way out of date.

Most artists will NOT share their hard earned contacts with curators and
Festival organizers AT ALL.

Also you will notice that other artists tend to "share" this information
when their work has been included in an event and the deadline for
submission is over.

Perhaps the best source for this kind of information is the V2 East
site. However they've recently redesigned it so it's just a list and you
then have go hunting through the posts to find an e-mail or web link.

As an artist with a purely personal and professional interest in this
subject, what I've done, and I recommend you do this also, is build your
own file of annual festivals so that you have plenty of time to prepare
your submission.

There is currently no reliable source on this subject.

*Perhaps all RHIZOMErs should pool their information for a permanent and
updated database*

Natasha Vita-More replied:

I agree with Dooley Le Cappellaine.

This list is the most active list on the Internet for artists and those
who do business in the arts. I would suggest that if there are
conferences and any us on this list could either submit an abstract to
or simply attend, that information is provided in enough advance.

Because this list is responsive to the needs of the list members, I
think that your suggestion that RHIZOME might work out a deal with those
who "announce" their conferences, competitions and/or events on the Web
site or this list with advance notice.

announcements have always been part of what RHIZOME supports. the
database initiate sounds interesting… right now not all announcements
make it from RAW into the CONTENTBASE on the site, so even a special
query there would not yield a good list. that said, i usually tag job
announcements with keyword "job," conference announcements with keyword
"conference," etc. so a hard core RHIZOMEr could track the stuff down
with a few creative queries in the CONTENTBASE.

i'm also working on new ways to automate the archiving of RAW… so
perhaps in the future we could create a special page on the site for
this permanent, updated database that you've called for above.

the second point i guess is that we need to make sure announcers realize
that they should post to RHIZOME. many in the new media art community
already do, but there's always a need to spread the word!

Dooley Le Cappellaine replied:

Good idea:
But:

*Rather than archiving old information:*
(which is what our compliant is based on.)

INSTEAD:

Why Not:

Invite RHIZOMErs to share/form a dynamic/mutual, database for the
information they have:

1: regarding specific curators of New Media

2: Annual exhibition opportunities of New Media

3: One of a kind exhibition opportunities

4: New media artists/curators wishing to contact other artists/curators

I love reading RAW. Even the posts with which I dont agree. However, it
would be *spectacular* to have a calendar mailed out monthly that lists
what's coming up the next month. calls for entry, submissions,
exhibitions, conferences, lectures etc. Very Fun! Anyone else think so?
Maybe readers could email in with a special format for the subject line:

Subject: calendar feb (my event here), (my date here).

I included announcements in the artnetwebINTELLIGENT AGENT newsletter
that I scarfed up from RHIZOME, nettime, Fine Art Forum and other
sources. It was a daily thing where I would copy anything I found to a
file then collate them for the monthly newsletter. I still plan to do
this but it is time-consuming and there has never been any sort of
support of any kind from institutions. Nada, nothing. It gets to the
point where you think why bother posting these things when you can't
even pay rent.

It would be valuable to have a listing of new media venues in RHIZOME
but I would think some of the more forward-thinking institutions–The
Walker, DIA, The Guggenheim, The Pompideu or an institution outside of
the U.S./Europe web–might take this project on. Or if there are lists
like this let us know so we can promote them.

I tried doing something like this on a performance art site I made about
a year ago, listing every link I could find to competitions,
exhibitions, venues, residencies, etc. Had there been more time or
money, I'd have loved to keep it up. Unfortunately, I had to get a job
instead. At the time I sought the help of other artists to keep it
going, but that never came to fruition. I'd still be willing to help if
someone wanted to revive such a database…

Regarding Alex's and Dooley's notes on archiving, I feel that orderly
archival of the RAW information is a wonderful idea. However, I
subscribed to RAW so that I would get the whole, unabridged story of
what everyone's talking about (or not). Dooley's idea of amassing a
database of new media arts information is also sorely needed, and I
realize that puts a larger onus on RHIZOME than they already have, if
they would decide to do such a thing.

Personally, I find the archiving of festival dates, conference
deadlines, curator names and addresses a horrific task, and it takes
about a day every month and a half, as I rifle through my E-mail and
printouts. A central online repository for this information would be a
godsend. As for the directories, we would have to make sure not to abuse
them, as I am afraid this could happen.
