At approximately 11:10 GMT this morning there was an earthquake near
Sumatra that measured 7.9 on the Richter scale. It just so happens
that at 11:10 this morning I was sitting at my computer here in
Reykjavik, Iceland working on my new piece. It's a piece that uses
realtime seismic data to affect the computer's automated redrawing of
photos downloaded from Flickr.com. Lately, I've been using a
seismometer that's located in Papua New Guinea that streams it's data
live over the Internet. Papua New Guinea is very close to Sumatra. A
prototype of the work can be seen running in realtime at
http://pallit.lhi.is/~palli/nude_studies and screencaptures from the
earthquake can be seen at

Thanks Lee. It's a bit shocking though. They've upgraded the
earthquake to 8.2 and so far, three people have died. Sure, I was
waiting and sort of hoping for an earthquake but nothing like this. I
live in a region where seismic activity is very common but we very
seldom get earthquakes that cause any serious damage to property or
people. So I hope people don't assume that by making this type of
work, I'm preying on the misfortunes of others. Seismic activity is
very common. The tectonic plates are moving, shifting and bouncing
around all the time but it doesn't always cause the kind of
destruction that this one apparently did.
