Serious. Fun.
Dr. Woohoo creates art that coalesces the intelligence of algorithms with the creative expressiveness of natural media (water color, felt pens and spray paint). Woohoo's Color Analytic algorithms analyze the color palettes from (in)famous paintings, organizing the colors based on their frequency distribution (frequency, relative frequency, etc.) and central tendencies (mode, median, weighted mean, etc.). This information helps determine the size and color of each brush stroke. A data visualization algorithm determines the location of the brush stroke based on a 2-dimensional HSV color space, where the hue determines the x-location and the saturation and brightness collectively determine the y-location. All of this information is then used by a painting algorithm which creates a painting session script by adding additional brush stroke characteristics such as the pressure, tilt, direction, speed and timing of the brush, as well as the brush characteristics that are unique to the type of natural media Woohoo is emulating, e.g., the wetness and diffusion amounts for water color. The final step involves Woohoo's painting machines, which are responsible for taking the painting script and painting it. Ultrachrome pigmented archival inks are used to create the final prints. Image size is 10" x 16".

Bio
Dr. Woohoo (translation: Serious Fun), is a New Mexico based artist, designer and developer creating work for a wide range of clients. Working with digital media since 1993, Woohoo's professional projects are available at http://www.drwoohoo.com. His personal projects include In The Mod: Color Analytics (ITM), http://www.inthemod.com, a site which analyzes, finds relationships between and includes downloadable color palettes of (in)famous paintings and brushes.paints.stencils.(BPS). BPS is an application he developed that emulates natural media, records the paint sessions, attaches interesting and unusual behaviors to the paint drops and plays them back in real-time or renders them out for broadcast tv, film or print.

Woohoo has won over 50 awards including Communication Arts Interactive award for self-promotion. He has exhibited his work at AIGA (Seattle), MAX (Singapore & Seoul), Flash Forward (Seattle), NAB (Las Vegas), OFFF: BCN (Barcelona), Center for Contemporary Arts (Santa Fe), Visual Music Marathon (Boston) & SXSW (Austin).
