Opening Reception: 7 - 9 PM
RSVP is mandatory.
Kindly RSVP by Monday, February 26.
The opening reception will follow a dialogue among Pedro Reyes (artist), Jo=
se Falconi (guest curator) and Doris Sommer (Director of the Cultural Age=
nts Initiative at Harvard University).
The first solo show of Mexican artist Pedro Reyes in the east coast, the ex=
hibition ad usum: To Be Used features pieces that are only completed when a=
ctivated or used in a certain context, many of them casting hope onto intra=
ctable social situations. ad usum showcases the research Reyes conducted in=
collaboration with the Cultural Agents Initiative at Harvard on the disput=
ed notion of the "utility" of art objects and processes.
The show comprises objects from Reyes' celebrated architectural and group t=
herapy past projects, as well as new works. Each of the pieces included pre=
sent formal qualities that result or trigger particular political responses=
on the viewer. Stretching functionalism to its limits, politics in Reyes' =
work is not a theme, but rather an inherent function of the intriguing shap=
es that he gives to his pieces.
This exhibition is organized in conjunction with the David Rockefeller Cent=
er for Latin American Studies, and is a selection from the show presented a=
t the Carpenter Center for Visual Arts at Harvard University until January =
2007.
The reception is made possible by the generous support of:

Video Screenings
Americas Society announces the launching of Video Trans-Americas, a project=
room dedicated to introducing the New York audience to important and innov=
ative works by artists from throughout the Western Hemisphere.
This initiative was inspired by the late multimedia artist Juan Downey, who=
se 1971 video installation series of the same name (Video Trans-Americas) w=
as one of the first to offer a broad view of America as inflected by histor=
ical, anthropological and personal concerns. In mixing such disparate image=
s, Chilean-born Downey (1940-1993) playfully intervened the otherwise fixed=
boundaries between fiction and documentary. In this spirit, Video Trans-Am=
ericas will celebrate the electronic media's position as a mediator between=
artistic expression and social intervention.
Appropriately, Video Trans-Americas' inaugural series will be a selection o=
f Juan Downey's celebrated single-channel videotapes, chosen by his widow M=
arilys Downey and Americas Society's Visual Arts Director Gabriela Rangel. =
This presentation will complement the gallery exhibition Pedro Reyes ad usu=
m: To Be Used.
The following works will be screened in three separate programs:
Fresh Air [Fresh Air Cart in collaboration with Gordon Matta-Clark] (1971-7=
3), Moving (1974), In the Beginning (1976), Chile (1974), Return of the Mot=
herland (1989), Chiloe, No (1988), The Laughing Alligator (1976-77), The Ab=
andoned Shabono (1978), Guahibos (1976), Guatemala (1973)
