The Digital Aesthetic 2 - Conference and Exhibition, Preston, UK, March-June 2007
A joint initiative between the Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston and the Electronic & Digital Art Unit at the University of Central Lancashire.
This event focuses on the impact and implications of digital technology on contemporary fine art practise including its aesthetic, social and historical contexts.
Artistic practice in new media embraces a wide variety of approaches, environments and experiences including: interactivity, non-linearity, virtual reality, telepresence, gaming, databases, chat rooms, artificial reality and 3D visualisation. Media artists are utilising an increasingly complex set of digital tools and devices and much of this work has considerable implications for the way in which we experience art - more significantly much of this work challenges assumptions about the nature of art and the way in which art is experienced and engaged with. Curators are faced with new questions in relation to issues of the preservation and presentation of digital works including the emulation of previous technological processes and systems.
The exhibition will consist of artworks from artists of regional, national and international importance at venues including The University of Central Lancashire and the Harris Museum and Art Gallery. The 2 day conference, taking place on 16th-17th of March 2007, will highlight, explore and debate the issues and implications of new media work within the contemporary fine art context.
A website at www.digitalaesthetic.org.uk has been constructed to accompany the exhibition and will include web based artwork as well as the opportunity to participate in the conference through live web streaming.
