ubu operates much as youtube: put stuff up without permission and keep it up unless someone objects. there was an interesting article in macleans a couple of weeks ago about youtube. they pointed out that other outfits very similar to youtube haven't done so well because they were more concerned with copyright issues.

HI Jim
Actually, I feel quite pissed off about this.
I wonder if there's more to it than meets the eye
-apparently it's OK for UBUWEB to
< operate(s) much as youtube: put stuff up without
permission and keep it up unless someone objects.>
but since they haven't left (in most cases - sometimes
they've been less than thorough) the links to the
original content in .avi or .mov format one can only
conclude that the above philosophy is OK for the folk
at UBUWEB but not for the rest of us.
Given their difficulties last year when lawyers'
letters forced them to temporarily remove most of
their movies I can't help wondering whether a
pragmatic bit of self protection, possibly under
pressure, is being dextrously disguised as something
we ought to be grateful for…
Plus, the quality of the movies, as on YouTube, is now
lamentable. Maybe this is what is meant by "YouTube of
the avant-garde"..
What a shame and what a loss!
