TART presents an online exhibition of Shane Carroll's new media works. Using data sources which include RSS and XML feeds from the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, Google News and craigslist, Carroll breathes momentary life into raw data.
During the current "War of Civilizations" the goal of communication becomes "speaking to the base" while paying lip service to diplomatic resolution. Carroll poses the question: Can the staggering amount of data available to citizens in a wired society be distilled and set in motion in ways that reveal essential aspects of that data?
Carroll transforms public data streams into two and three dimensional behaviors that shift and/or expand the context of the information source. March '03 uses xml feeds to drive the animation of discrete units to show each casualty, the sweep of each month and the cumulative effect. Home Front reveals US military casualties in Iraq by State, PR redux explores news coverage regarding the Iran 'crisis' and import / EXPORT serves democracy as product.
Shane Carroll lives and works in San Francisco. He has received awards from Ars Electronica Festival, Warsaw Music Festival, and Silicon Graphics. His work has been shown at FILE Symposium, Sao Paulo; The Institute of Contemporary Art, London; Propeller Toronto and online for Rhizome where he has been a member since 2002.
