Visual Studies is a new studio program at GVSU that reflects interdisciplinary approaches used in contemporary art practice including the use of digital media, and context as a primary consideration in visual works. There are six studio courses in the emphasis area that are offered to both Art and Non-Art Majors. Art Majors may select Visual Studies as their emphasis area in the BFA Program or take the courses as electives. Civic Studio, Curatorial Studio, and Space Studio address the creation of contexts and engagements in the presentation of art. The other 3 courses incorporate various forms of digital media in the creation and presentation of art. In Image Studio the focus is on the static image on screens, projections, and materialized images. In Time Studio performance, video, and audio are studied as they are employed in the creation and presentation of Art. Interactive Studio addresses works that create situations for exchange with the viewer; including digital interfaces such as Web sites and databases. Students can take each of the Visual Studies studio courses twice. This visiting position is focussed primarily on Interactive Studio.
Creative Problem Solving
The Creative Problem solving course is one of six courses in the Foundations Program at Grand Valley. It focuses on the use of new digital media, the creative process, orientation to ways of working in art and design, and the importance of concept. A syllabus for the course can be found at:
