5TH INT.MANIFESTATION OF VIDEO AND ELECTRONIC ART
MONTREAL SEPTEMBER 16-23 2002

The 5th INTERNATIONAL MANIFESTATION OF VIDEO AND
ELECTRONIC ARTS OF MONTREAL (MIVAM) is creating an event to
pursue a critical artistic exploration on the linkage of a historical urban
district, its architecture and the role of electronic media in transforming
the structure, presence and perception of the urban sphere. Starting from
a new territory of investigation - the future urban redevelopment district
Centre-Sud of Montreal - the Manifestation seeks a poetic and artistic
reinterpretation of the current urban setting into the space of a CITf DES
ONDES (Radiant City). The chosen site - an urbanistically atypical area at
the edge of MontrealOs city centre - possesses a unique identity with a
strong potential for social, economic and cultural development. This
identity, largely defined by the presence of major institutions related to
the domains of broadcast and telecommunications, is intended to be
defined by the creation of the CITf DES ONDES as a vehicle to reactivate
this historically significant urban zone.

The primary focal point of the Manifestation will be the historically
significant Craig Pumping Station located at 2000 St-Antoine Street East.
Built in 1887 following one of the worst floods in MontrealOs history, this
stone edifice is now abandoned after having ceased its operation
several years ago. The building - a heritage structure - now sits isolated,
nearly imperceptible on a sliver of green within an interurban highway,
below and adjacent to the impressive Jacques Cartier Bridge, one of
MontrealOs primary urban landmarks. The media arts organisation
Champ Libre has chosen this site for the 2002 Manifestation in order to
stimulate an artistic and urban debate while setting into motion an active
mechanism to define the vision and future urban vocation of both the site
and the neighbourhood - the future CITf DES ONDES.

Champ Libre invites proposals for projects within the realm of media and
electronic arts to activate (rather than simply intervene) the Craig
Pumping Station and the surrounding site. The works (projection,
performance, installation, audio, video, virtual) selected for the
Manifestation will be diffused as indoor and outdoor public broadcasts
and live events. Particular attention will be given to works which present
an originality of artistic expression, presentation and potential for
interaction between the urban community and the site. In addition to the
in-situ diffusion Champ Libre will also occupy selected satellite locations
(gardens, metro stations, public interstices) to create a plural
scenography integrating electronic arts within the intersection of
architecture and urbanism.

Project proposals, works and abstracts are being accepted until July 1,
2002 (offline support material for international submissions may be
received up to July 12, 2002). For further information, submission rules
and forms please consult the project site at www.champlibre.com.
